Brick

Oil on Canvas | 40″ x 44″ | 2018

I’ve had this brick with a spoon on a plate sitting in my studio for about 16 or 17 years. I found the brick on a walk in the Sandwich dunes, and the plate I borrowed from Karen — it was one of her two or three college plates. I forget where the spoon came from.

The arrangement always reminded me of promises to the hungry, the kind of promises politicians make to get votes. If you vote for me I’ll bring back your jobs and roll back all of your taxes and make all education free for your children. Promises that cannot be fulfilled.

The hungry do as they’re told for the promise of a better life but are soon forgotten, no better than they were.
